Getting Through “Shadow Season”

This time of year is commonly known in spiritual circles as “shadow season”.

The shadow is the concept coined by psychologist Carl Jung. It refers to the less ideal aspects of ourselves that we sometimes try to avoid or silence.

This time of year in the Northern Hemisphere brings us face to face with our shadow, because it’s also known in some spiritual circles as a time when the “veils are thin”.

Some people believe this means that the veils separating our ability to perceive spiritually become more thin.

I think this is true in a number of ways this time of year.

What we notice happening outside of us often reflects back to us what we know needs attention inside of us.

As the darkness outside grows, we start to notice the darkness inside ourselves.

There is nothing wrong with that! That is totally natural.

In fact, the darkness can be sacred.

Darkness does not need to mean “bad” or “scary”. Darkness can be sacred. In that quiet and stillness, perhaps is our opportunity to meet ourselves face to face.

If you’re interested in a journaling exercise to support a specific goal you have – even through the growing darkness this fall – check out my Instagram post from today.

It includes options for you whether you just like to journal, or if you have a deck of affirmation/joy/oracle cards, or Tarot cards.
