how to pull tarot cards: jumper cards

Series: How To Pull Tarot Cards: “Jumper” Cards

For those of you who are newer to Tarot, I’ve created a few posts to share some simple how-tos on pulling Tarot cards. Today I’m sharing card “pull” by shuffling until you have a “jumper” card (or two).

Before you begin

The following instructions will appear at the start of each Tarot pull 101 how-to:

I always recommend that you do something to get into a focused, intentional state before slinging your cards. Some people take a few breaths, others set up protective energy circle around them, still others say a prayer, and yet others simply state (out loud or silently) their intention to receive wisdom from a place of highest vibration. Do whatever is right for you.

“Jumper” cards

A jumper card is a card that falls out of the deck while you are shuffling. There are folks who only read jumper cards, and there are folks who never read them. I regularly read jumper cards.

A note about reading Tarot jumper cards

The key is knowing when it’s a jumper card, or just clumsy shuffling!

For me, I’ll read them as jumper cards if it’s up to about 3 cards that fall out. But if a quarter of the deck falls out, that’s just clumsiness! In my experience, it’s never a weird middle ground. Either there are 1 – 3 jumper cards, or very occasionally I’m clumsy and drop half the deck!

Step 1: Start with shuffling your deck, however you like to shuffle. Typically, jumper cards are easier if you overhand shuffle, but they can work with any style of shuffling. Keep shuffling, thinking about your question, until a card falls out of the deck.

In this case, two cards fell out of the deck when I shuffled, so I picked them up and used them.

Step 2: Pick up the cards and place them in front of you. Read your card(s) as normal, noticing what pops for you, and referring to your guidebook as helpful.

FOR EXPERIENCED TAROT FOLKS: If you don’t read jumper cards, would you ever be open to trying it out? Even if you’re a riffle shuffler?
