When Bad Things Happen to Spiritual People. Part 2

In my last post on why bad things can still happen to spiritual people, I promised I’d come back and talk about duality.

I thought by the law of attraction, only good things should happen to me if I’m staying high frequency.” This is a common belief that really needs to be more closely examined before you just take it and run with it.

That’s because of the concept of duality.

What is duality?

Duality is the relationship between polarities.

Polarities are the opposing ends of a spectrum.

  • For example, polarities are the two sides of a coin. But the coin isn’t just made up of two images, right? There’s an actual coin between the two images, holding them together. That’s duality.

Let’s think of some other examples of polarity.

  • From an energetic perspective, there’s yin energy, or a feminine element, and then there’s yang energy, or a masculine energy. Those are polarities. The duality though is the relationship between those opposing energies.

But goodness gracious that all sounds very philosophical so LET’S TALK ABOUT ICE CREAM instead.

When is the last time you had a sundae? With warm caramel drizzled on top? Or one of those chocolate-dipped cones?

That cold ice cream with that warm, melted sauce (or chocolate). Those are polarities. You’ve got cold ice cream, and warm sauce of chocolate.

What’s the duality? The flavour experience in your mouth and brain!!!

Maybe ice cream isn’t your thing.

But what about all those sea salted caramel topped – well, everything! From chocolate bars to lattes, that combination of sweet and salty is the delicious duality between the polarities of seeming opposites. Or other sweet and salty confections. Or BBQ sauce. Sweet and tangy!

There are plenty of examples of polarity. We have planets going direct, and retrograde. We are active, we rest. We intake, we expend. The Universe expands, and gravity maintains our solar system.

What does this have to do with my caution around the idea of staying super “high vibe” all the time?

That’s because the idea of remaining super “high vibe” suggests that we would only ever hang out in that one pole (“high vibe”). That’s like only ever eating salt (or only eating sugar). It leaves out the other side of the relationship.

And zero growth happens in the absence of something to grow through. And if you’re not growing, are you truly as high vibe as you originally thought? Something to think about.

Duality is actually a beautiful concept.

It’s the lived experience in life that offers rich complexity. Like that sundae.

It doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t go after good things – of course not! Of course you should find the things you want in life and go after them! And yes, you should align yourself internally with all the love that’s available to you.

But not at the expense of pretending that difficult things are somehow “bad”.

Not at the expense of learning to be truly present with ourselves.

And certainly not at the expense of growing through what we experience.

So the real question is, are you the sundae or the chocolate-dipped cone?
